Tomorrow night (or today, depending on when you read this), we’ll be proudly hosting the second evening in our Lost City Winter Series. This time, we’ve got a night of electronics and experimentation. Read on below for a preview of the sounds to come, and check out the facebook event here for more information.

Kicking off the night is Nude Human, the ambient duo of John Praw (Pushmi-Pullyu, Dressed Up) and Patrick Reinholz (Lovely Socialite, Weather Duo). The two will wash the walls with soothing sounds in special 4.0 surround sound. That’s right, we’ll be setting up two PA systems for this unique show. To make the show even better, the duo will be recording the second half of their debut album live at the show.

Second, we have Echo Island – Madison’s own Brad Hawes. 2012 was a big year for Echo Island, seeing the release of both In Circles and his most recent album, Metropia. Brad combines classic electronic sounds with a live drum set, making for a more than entertaining live show. CONTROL is a unique breed in Madison. Releasing a trio of EPs, the band has gained a reputation for creating a live show with a sense of balance that keeps them from getting too far down the paths of post-rock cliches or math-rock obsessions. The result is a warm, organic flow, featuring the best of both worlds. Check out their EPs, Longino K, Schulte A and Grabhorn C.

For over a decade, the Brothers Grimm have been performing string music together on guitar, cello and Chinese string instruments. Tonight, however, Brian Grimm is going solo under the name Brain Grimmer. It’s up in the air as to what he’ll be creating, but in recent recordings and performances, Brian has combined his skill with cello and ancient Chinese sounds with a penchant for electronic experimentation. If it’s anything like his past work, Brain Grimmer will be making sounds you’ve never heard anywhere else.

Mine All Mine & the Lost City crew are proud to announce the Lost City Winter Series 2012-2013. A “spiritual successor” to last year’s Mine All Mine Winter Series, shows will be held at the Dragonfly Lounge every other week all winter long. The series features many local and regional artists seen at the Lost City Music Festival 2012, plus newcomers to the scene.

Highlights include the Winter Series Kick-Off Party on December 21st (the first day of winter), and the Winter Series Finale on March 19th (the last day of winter).  The Winter Series Finale will feature Madison-favorites Man Mantis and Double Ewes, with a headlining set from Ever Ending Kicks (featuring Paul from Mt. Eerie, Motorbikes, LAKE, etc).

Each show will include special, hand-crafted merchandise (limited edition posters, screen printed shirts, etc.), and 25% of ticket sales will go toward the Lost City Music Festival 2013.  Oh yes, we will be doing it all again next summer, and we need your help to make it even better than ever.  Hit up one or more of our shows this winter, snag some merch, and support doing big things in local music!

The festival starts tomorrow!  For now, here’s another quick update…

Lost City Music Festival Bowling Tournament
Do you like bowling?  Do you like cake?  Then come to the Lost City Music Festival Bowling tournament!  The tournament is Sunday, July 8th, 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Dream Lanes (13 Atlas Court, Madison, WI).  Entry is only $5 per person!  And it’s completely FREE for performing bands, volunteers and people with festival wristbands.

Signup is at 2:30 PM this Sunday, and there are some great prizes.  The winning team gets their hands on the coveted Lost City Bowling Tournament Champion Trophy, and the highest scoring bowler will receive a free Murfie Gold membership with $50 credit to buy whatever music they want!  Special thanks to our sponsor, Murfie.com, for these awesome prizes!

Barring any minor tweaks or chances, you can now find the entire written schedule here.  It includes links to Facebook events for all of the shows (including our master event), plus links to pages for all of the artists.  You can also find a list of all 70+ performers on our lineup page.  There, you’ll find performance times and venues, as well as streaming links for (almost) every performer.  So much music for only $10!  (Hint, buy your very own all-access wristband!)

Charities
As many of you know, this entire festival is a not-for-profit endeavor.  My planning team and I have spent hundreds of hours organizing the festival, all the bands are performing for free, and all the shows are being run by 30+ wonderful volunteers.  All of this free time is because we care about young people having access to music education.  All proceeds from the festival will benefit Madison Music Makers, the Madison Area Music Association and Girls Rock Camp Madison.  That means your paid admission will make a direct impact on the youth of Madison, continuing the tradition of local music giving back to the community.  Proceeds given to Madison Music Makers and the Madison Area Music Association will help provide music equipment and supplies, and proceeds given to Girls Rock Camp Madison will help provide scholarships to kids who can not afford to attend otherwise.

You read correctly!  With the addition of a partner (the wonderful people at Murfie), we are proud to announce that we are lowering the price of our complete festival wristbands to $10.  This means that you can see all of our 14 (or so) shows for only ten bucks!

If you were thinking of seeing even two shows that weekend, you’d get your money’s worth.  Since the festival is completely for charity, we think it’s important to make it as accessible as possible.  We hope you’ll agree that $10 for complete access to all of our shows, featuring over 70 bands, is one helluva deal.

Were you one of the early adopters to already buy your wristbands?  Don’t worry!  We’ll be contacting you shortly to refund the extra or offer you an extra wristband (your choice).

In the last week since officially announcing the festival, things have been sort of crazy.  First of all, the response to the festival has been exciting.  We’ve gotten lots of great ideas and feedback on where we are and where we should go.  Thanks to those of you who have started following and sharing our updates on facebook!  We also have a twitter account (for updating you on artist start times), an an official mailing list.

Today, we’re incredibly excited to announce that the Lost City Music Festival 2012 now has an official sponsor!  Murfie, a unique new music market built in the heart of Madison, has generously offered to help cover our costs and partner with us in this endeavor.  More importantly, Murfie is dedicated to helping us give back to the community.   Though we were avoiding a sponsor initially, Murfie is really interested in working toward making this festival a success – we really appreciate their earnest enthusiasm.  Expect more information on this partnership, but for now, expect to see plenty of Murfie folks volunteering at the festival.  Check them out on facebook, and their website.

With the motto “Fashion For Fringe Folk,” the Good Style Shop (est. 2009) is Madison’s only curated vintage clothing and records store. The shop was previously owned by Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis (of Peaking Lights), and the current owner, Peter Benck, is keeping it alive with the help of some keen-eyed buyers. Space at the Good Style Shop is extremely limited, so show up early for our experimental showcase this year.

Full of Bull Famous Roast Beef is a restaurant and a meeting spot, and now, the world’s first roast beef sandwich shop serving double duty as a festival venue! Their menu includes, slow roasted beef, turkey and pork, fresh vibrant salads, giant jacket potatoes topped with just about anything you can imagine and a selection of all natural frozen custards that are sure to please even the fiercest appetite.

The Rigby is a new retro-rock inspired pub and grill taking up three levels on Madison’s East Main Street. They host open mics, DJs, private events and movie nights in their underground Cavern Club. Word around town is that their homemade food is to die for.

Over 160 bands have been invited, and of those, we’re whittling the list down to ~40 bands to perform from July 5th to July 8th in nine epic showcases!  The process isn’t easy, that’s for sure.  The caliber of bands interested in playing our little festival was beyond our wildest dreams, and we are grateful to be in this position.  Of the bands invited, over 75 confirmed availability for the festival.  It’s interesting to see that we would need literally 20 shows to contain all the awesome bands that want to play!

After a few short months of planning and networking, it’s clear that the Lost City Music Festival fills a definite cultural void in the area.  There just isn’t anything like it in Madison anymore, so we’re bringing it back!  Check back soon for confirmed venues and bands.
